The Basics

How Credit Repair Works

Credit repair is the process of reviewing your credit reports and disputing information that may be inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable. It is not a way to erase accurate negative information or guarantee a specific score. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), you have the right to dispute items you believe are wrong, and the credit bureaus must investigate — usually within 30 days. We help you understand your reports, organize well-documented disputes, and build habits that support long-term progress.

Where Credit Problems Often Start

These are some of the items we help clients understand and, where appropriate, dispute.

Late payments — payment history is the single largest FICO factor.
High utilization — using a large share of your available credit can lower your score.
Collections — third-party accounts that may be disputed or validated under the FDCPA.
Charge-offs — accounts a creditor has written off, but that you may still owe.
Hard inquiries — applications for new credit that you may not recognize.
Mixed files & reporting errors — information that belongs to someone else.
Identity theft — fraudulent accounts that require special handling.

FAQ

Common Questions

A few of the questions we hear most — see the full list on our FAQ page.

What is credit repair?

Credit repair is the process of reviewing your credit reports and disputing information that may be inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, you have the right to dispute such items, and the credit bureaus must investigate. It is not a way to remove accurate, current negative information.

What does a credit repair company do?

A credit repair company helps you review your Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion reports, identify items that may be inaccurate or unverifiable, and organize documented disputes to the bureaus and, when appropriate, the companies that furnished the information. It can also provide education and ongoing support. It cannot legally remove accurate information.

Is credit repair legal?

Yes. Credit repair is legal and your rights are protected by federal law, including the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and the Credit Repair Organizations Act (CROA). Legitimate companies must follow these laws — including providing a written contract and honoring your right to cancel.

How long does credit repair take?

It varies by individual credit profile. Credit bureaus generally have 30 days to investigate a dispute (up to 45 in some cases), so meaningful change often takes several dispute cycles over a few months. Anyone promising instant results should be treated with caution.
